Includes letter from Sterne to the mother of Louis Merz, after Merz was killed at the Battle of Sharpsburg (Antietam), Sept. 28, 1862; a furlough (1864 Jan. 5) issued to Sterne; a pledge of honor not to abuse his parole (1864 Sept. 27), signed by Sterne, who was detailed to serve wounded Confederate prisoners after he had been captured by Federal troops following the 3rd Battle of Winchester; and eulogies in the La Grange Reporter and the Pittsburgh Evening Leader relating to the death of Louis Merz (1875).
